Aftercare | Blood Blues Tattoos

After your tattoo appointment, it’s essential to strictly follow the aftercare guidance featured below to ensure your tattoo heals properly. Proper aftercare means your tattoo will look its very best when fully healed, and prevents complications ranging from the irritating and uncomfortable, to the outright dangerous.

  • Firstly, ensure your new tattoo is covered with cling film for 2-4 hours following a session concluding. If you’re going to be out and about or partaking in activities in the 24 hours following your sitting, cover the tattoo accordingly.
  • After the film is removed, you should gently wash the tattoo with antimicrobial soap and water; ensure your hands are clean and that you pat it completely dry when finished. You should then give your tattoo some time to breathe.
  • The next morning, begin applying a layer of antibacterial ointment to the tattoo site. Keep it moisturised to prevent it drying out, roughly three times a day.
  • Regularly wash the area with antimicrobial soap and water, before gently patting it dry and applying another layer of antibacterial ointment. Again, around three times a day is ideal.
  • Under no circumstances should you swim, take a bath or go for a dip in the sea when your tattoo is still healing. This is guaranteed to give you a serious infection, which is the last thing you want!

You should expect your tattoo to take between two weeks and a month to heal. Following the above guidance will help minimise healing times, and safeguard against infection. Should you suspect your tattoo has become infected, immediately consult your doctor. To see some of our work, both in the process of healing and fully healed, click here.
